The Salem Township Hamlet
By some definitions, Hamlets are a compact cluster of residential buildings in a rural/historical setting, located at a crossroads, and are accompanied by such things as a tavern, convenience store, restaurant, and meeting or civic spaces.
Hamlets are usually not legal entities and have no local government or official boundaries. Their proximate location will often be noted on road signs.
A hamlet could be described as the rural or suburban equivalent of a neighborhood in a city or village. The area of a hamlet may not be exactly defined and may simply be contained within the ZIP code of its post office, or may be defined by its school or fire district.
The Salem Hamlet is a quiet, compact settlement with the character of a small rural village. The characteristics which have made Salem an attractive place to live have been unaltered by non-residential land uses in the immediate and general environs. Salem Hamlet continues to serve as a community, school and governmental focal point within the Township.
