Fire Department Hosts CSX Railway Training Salem Township Fire Department hosted three days of CSX Railway Hazardous Materials Training this past weekend. Members of the Washtenaw County Hazardous Materials Response Team, Western-Wayne Hazardous Response Team, Downriver Hazardous Response Team and Oakland County Hazardous Response Team participated. This training provided greater understanding of how rail cars are constructed and how they operate. This understanding assists firefighters and other emergency workers in knowing what to do in the event there is a hazardous situation involving a railroad car. There were several hours of classroom time before firefighters were given practical hands-on training. Firefighters gathered at the Onyx Materials Recycling facility where a converted refrigerated car, a pressurized tank car and a general tank car were located on a railroad siding. Firefighters spent time climbing on, under and around these cars familiarizing themselves with their construction, valves and other hardware. Teams participated in several hazmat scenarios. Training such as this has always been important but even more so after world events like the Madrid, Spain train bombings. The CSX rail system had only seven hazardous materials incidents last year where product was released into the environment. Millions of tons of hazardous materials were shipped during the same period. There are numerous incidents where vehicles fail to observe the train’s right-of-way resulting in accidents. We would like to thank Ron Rolent from Onyx Materials Recycling facility for allowing the railroad cars to be parked on their siding. We would also like to thank Michael Bethge and Joseph Tupa with CSX Transportation for providing such valuable training to about one hundred local firefighters.
