FROM NEWS REPORTS
SALEM TOWNSHIP - Johnson Controls Inc. is expected Tuesday to seek a rezoning on 360 acres at Joy and Napier roads, land the company has tapped for its new automotive world headquarters, Township Supervisor Fred Roperti said.
The land was earlier designated an "Urban Services District" for a previous developer, Real Estate Interests, which won approval to bring in sewers to accommodate 310 single-famiy homes.
That plan raised an outcry among neighbors.
Johnson Controls, which manufactures car interiors and is now located in Plymouth Township, wants the acreage -which it purchased in January -rezoned to "research and research associated," a new designation in the township's ordinance.
It would accommodate a research park-like campus, Roperti said.
The sewer issue is still unresolved, he added.
In the past, the Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority and the Western Townships Utility Authority, the latter serving burgeoning Canton Township, have been slow to commit capacity until the needs of the respective communities they currently serve have been met, officials have said.
JCI's construction of its own sewer treatment plant is always an option, officials have said.
The township board meets at 7:30 p.m. at township hall, 9600 Six Mile Road.
