SALEM TOWNSHIP - Dirt bikers and four-wheelers who think they've found country are stirring up dust and whining their engines on private, undeveloped property in this still-rural area, and officials here are moving to adopt an ordinance to stop it following complaints from neighbors.

Add the open burning of trees and brush, free-roaming, dangerous and barking dogs and blaring car stereos to the list of complaints he's received since taking office last November, Supervisor Fred Roperti said, and the focus widens.

"These kinds of activities may infringe on the rights of property owners to be able to enjoy their property," Roperti told the board in a letter, offering for review a sample five-page ordinance deemed "the best from the numbers obtained," but "not the final product."

In its final form, the law could address loud radios, yelling or shouting after 10 p.m., animal, bird or fowl that emanate frequent or extended noise that disturbs the quiet, comfort or repose of people in the vicinity, car horns, machinery operation and more.

Roperti and Trustee Brien Witkowski invite interested residents to participate in the process. For information, call township hall at (248) 349-1690.
